ZONING UPDATES OR STATUS:

Kennedy Blvd. retail issue - same status. The developer is still involved in this issue.

Beach Park Archways preservation update given at Fall meeting. A summary will be added her.

We met with the City and laid out a timeline for getting bids for the work and planning for a city council approval for funds.  The City is managing this project and we must follow the city's guidelines.  The city is holding the $750 grant for this project.  The city is waiting for architect's drawings and will ask for bids to be due by Nov. 1, 2008.  The city will go before council in their first December 2008 meeting for council's approval of the project.  The renovation project is planned to start in January, pending council's approval.  James Jackson with the City of Tampa Contract Administration will act as project manager.  The BPHA will be included in decisions regarding paint color and tile selection. The work will include creating an expansion joint and shoring up the structures, cleaning, renovating, pressure washing, re-tiling, sealing cracks and painting.  Also, the bronze plaques will be returned to their positions on the side walls of the middle structure.  The City will pay for work on the middle section and the portions of the side wing walls which are on public property.  The BPHA will raise funds as needed to supplement the approx. $4,000 that residents have already donated to pay for the portions that reside on private property on the south section. The southern residents have granted permission for access to the property and are supporting the renovation efforts.  The northern property owners have not done so at this time.

Thank you for your generous donations, and we will let you know when the work is actually about to begin, and if we need to raise additional funds.

Tampa Police  Pledge to Provide Superior Customer Service to the Public - calls for help
Call the Police phone numbers in this order of severity, worst to least:

911 - call if you feel you are in danger

231-6130 - call to speak to Tampa Police dispatch to report suspicious people, suspicious things, descriptions of suspicious people, bothersome solicitors who just "don't feel right" to you.  This number is manned 24/7, but sometimes you might need to wait a few seconds.

354-6600 - Tampa Police  South Tampa District One office - call to report things to the Police that you want them to know, or information that they are seeking, or to ask a question of our District officers.  This number is also manned 24/7, but you might need to leave a message if the call volume is heavy.

When you call any of these numbers, the Police may want to call you back for more information.  If you prefer not to provide you own information that is okay, too.

We would like to thank Lt. Scott and Capt. Miller for their time at our meeting, and Supervisor Donovan of disptach.

Another useful tool is to use the City's website to report something that ocurred in the past or to ask questions of the force.  Dont' use the website to report something happening to you at the moment if you are in need of help or want the Police to be able to dispatch someone out right away.  However, each time I have used the city website to report something or ask a question, I have always gotten my answers and replies.  The city webiste is www.TampaGov.net

This is crime season - please use your alarm systems, set the alarms, lock your doors, lock your car doors, keep your garage door closed, lock your gates.

DON'T MAKE IT EASY FOR THE DISGUSTING CREEPS TO TAKE YOUR STUFF.

I know it is an inconvenience to have to lock your doors if you are in your garage or doing yard work, but it is a good idea to lock your doors at all times to prevent an easy entry into your home.   For those of you who mow your own lawns or work in your back yard, please take a moment to close your garage doors and lock your doors when you are in your back yard.

"Theft and vandalism are crimes of opportunity. By taking simple steps like closing your garage door or locking your car, you can greatly reduce your chances of becoming a victim. By locking your garage door you reduce the risk of having things stolen, and possibly preventing the quick sale of your items."

Water Main Replacement Project in Beach Park

Beach Park residents received letters from the city if their water main service needs to be moved from the rear to the front, and other residents received the letter, below, if they may be impacted by the construction.

Eric Weiss, Mr. Baird and Mr. Henry presented their project summary at our meeting and answered questions of the residents.

Dear {property owner}, 521 total

As part of our continued commitment to Investing in Neighborhoods, the City of Tampa Water Department is planning to replace water lines in your neighborhood early next year.  The mains are old, unreliable, and undersized to meet current standards for water pressure and fire protection.

This project will require some property owners to relocate their water service line from the rear of their property to the front.  Our records do not indicate that your water service will be required to be relocated.  Affected property owners will be notified by a separate letter.

Please direct any questions or concerns about the project to Eric Weiss, Water Department Chief Engineer at 274-8039.  In addition, the City will be available at the Beach Park Homeowner's Association meeting on November 18, 2008 to provide additional information and answer any questions about this project.

We appreciate your patience and we look forward to your cooperation in order to ensure a safe, successful project.

Sincerely,

Brad L. Baird, P.E., Director
Tampa Water Department

Hard economic times may bring out more criminals, and our security patrols are there to watch out for us.

The time when you are going on vacation and leaving your homes empty is also the time when thieves start burglarizing homes.  The security patrols vacation watch is an excellent benefit of the paid membership.  The Tampa Police officers will check out your home and property while you are away and call your emergency contact number if necessary.

If you are new to Beach Park, or haven't renewed, please send in your membership payment now so we can continue to keep our officer patrolling Beach Park, and not have them all deployed out to Ybor City.

SECURITY PATROLS BREAK UP ILLEGAL HOUSE PARTY

Your Beach Park Security Patrols (armed Tampa Police) recently discovered an illegal house party being held at a vacant house under construction.  The Police officer knew the house was vacant from his patrolling in the area and so he called for back up when he saw cars lined up and down the street and saw activity at the house.

Dozens of underage minors had been bused to the house from North Tampa for an alcohol graduation party.  The Police officers found the host of the party, an over-30 year old man, hiding in a closet with two teenage girls.  The teens' parents were called to come pick up their children.

Our officers potentially saved the lives of dozens of teens who may have binged on alcohol or tried to drive while being impaired.  Their alert patrolling and actions are to be commended.

Obviously, we don't hear about the crimes that are prevented by having our security patrols in place, but it is a fact that our patrols have picked up felons, arrested burglars, caught thieves in the act, and have kept unwanted thugs out of our neighborhood by patrolling our streets at night.

Crimes that did not occur are not reported with statistics - but please know that our hard working Tampa Police officers are out there every night protecting our neighborhood, and keeping the crime rate low.

Time to renew your patrols membership.  The fiscal year begins July 1, so please try to get your fees in ahead of time so we can ensure we have the funds for another year.  If you have not yet renewed, please do so now.  As costs rise, the number of hours we can hire diminishes, so we need more members to join to keep our level of security at the levels we've had for the past 8 consecutive years this program has been in place.
